#042柚花烏龍｜Pomelo Flower Oolong
Before getting married to the third-generation owner of a local tea farm in Dongshan, the young tea making lady of 花間茶語, Ms. Yu-chen Huang, was a novice when it came to tea. Dongshan is not only a tea-producing region but also a pomelo-producing area(Taiwanese pomelos are pear-shaped and are called "柚子, /Youzi/" in Taiwanese Chinese). The flowering season of Taiwanese pomelos is from late March to mid-April each year (the fruits mature around October and are popular during the Mid-Autumn Festival), coinciding with the production of new spring oolong tea. Since some of the pomelo flowers need to be picked, in order to concentrate the nutrients in the pomelo fruit.
Ms. Huang developed a new herbal tea, "Pomelo Flower Oolong," by roasting the picked pomelo flowers, which were originally intended to be discarded, with the oolong tea the family grow and make.
She brought a fresh perspective different from that of her professional husband and in-laws. Nowadays, starting with pomelo flowers, she continuously develops various herbal teas using different flowers. She experiments daily with various materials, such as the osmanthus from Pinglin and the chrysanthemums from Tongluo in Miaoli.
Taiwanese pomelos have a sweet grapefruit-like flavor, and their flowers not only have a citrusy aroma but also a faint creamy scent, resulting in a very elegant taste. The flavor changes when brewed with hot water versus cold brewing, allowing for various ways to enjoy it.
Notes｜Limited-edition product available during the pomelo flower season. After opening, it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight and humidity, and to use it as soon as possible.
