学名のSapindusは「インドの石鹸」という意味で、たっぷりのサポニンを持つ天然石鹸。アジア諸国では石鹸が誕生される前に洗剤として使われていました。今は昔ほど沢山残っていないのですが、郊外の山に行くとその木が目に入ります。 工業化により、化学で合成される石鹸や洗剤が溢れる今の時代は、無患子のサポニンを使った洗剤や石鹸も商品としてオーガニックショップなどで並べています。 龍眼もライチも無患子科の仲間なので、実中の種は龍眼とそっくり。水に浸けると泡が立ち、しっかりと油を取ってくれました。 将来の家の庭にも、一本植えたらより天然な生活ができるんだな、と思いました(実る季節は秋から翌年の春だけですが)。
Sapindis meaning “Indian soap”, is a kind of tree whose fruit contains much saponin, also called “soapberry”, and was widely used for cleaning in the ancient time. Ever since the chemical soap become more and more popular in our daily life, the trees of Sapindus has been abandoned although we can still find some in the mountains. The sapindus family also contains longan and litchi, which we find the seeds of soapberry identical to longan. Nowadays we can find detergent using saponin extracted from soapberries in some organic shops, but I just started dreaming planting one in my yard of my future home...
